community organizing

former ARSP volunteer Mattias Berwanger at the Jewish Council on Urban Affairs, Chicago

In addition to performing direct social service work, ARSP volunteers learn community organizing skills in low-income and disadvantaged neighborhoods. Community organizing is a grassroots approach to democracy that is not well known in Europe. Through community organizing, people learn to take their lives into their own hands instead of waiting for politicians and bureaucrats to solve their problems. ARSP volunteers learn first-hand that it is possible to take a stand, show civil courage and achieve goals step-by-step.

Partner organizations include:

Clinton Housing Development Co.

New York, NY

Jewish Council on Urban Affairs

Chicago, IL

"I also feel that the skills that NTIC can impart to the volunteers will pay dividends back in Germany when the volunteers return home to work for social change there.”

Shel Trapp, Staff Director, NTIC, Chicago
