April 11 through April 12, 2010 - Reading of the Names: Yom HaShoah Commemoration at the JCC in Manhattan

Steffi Pfalz, organizer of the commemoration, about the participation of ARSP volunteers:

[...] Another moving moment was when some German volunteers came and read along with our own volunteer, Anne, who helped in putting this commemoration together. Hearing them talk after the stopped reading about how "real" this experience was for them, made me stop my work and listen in. Anne said that listening is something totally different than actually reading the names. The names became "real" for her once she read them, a name that had a face, family, a life... I am so grateful that each year we have this group of German volunteers come and honor the memory of the victims of the Shoah. [...]

"Thomas has provided a meaningful additional relationship to these and many other needy, isolated clients. He comes to them personifying an ideal that none of them had ever expected in a young German. He gives them hope that the future may be good."
